Amongst the Waves Lyrics

Amongst the Waves Lyrics from the Pearl Jam Album: Backspacer

Lyrically, the song kind of runs a 'surfing-as-life-metaphor'. Slightly anthemic Amongst the Wave was written by guitarist Stone Gossard and the 'yrics written by the 'voice of a generation', Eddie Vedder, "Amongst the Waves" was released on June 21, 2010 as the third single from the band's ninth studio album, Backspacer

Lyrics: Amongst the Waves

What used to be a house of cards
Has turned into a reservoir
Saved the tears that were waterfalling
Let’s go swim tonight, darling

and Once outside the undertow
Just you and me and nothing more
If not for love I would be drowning
I’ve seen it work both ways, but I am up

Riding high amongst the waves
I can feel Like I
Have a soul that has been saved
I can feel like I
Put away my early grave

Gotta say it now
Better loud
Than too late

Remember back the early days
When you were young and thus amazed

Suddenly the channel changed
The first time you saw blood

Cut to later, now you’re strong
You’ve bled yourself, the wounds are gone
It’s rare then where is nothing wrong
Survived and you’re amongst the fittest

Love ain’t love until you give it up

Riding high amongst the waves
I can feel like I
Have a soul that has been saved
I can see the light
Coming through the clouds in rays

Gotta say it now
Better loud
than too late...

  1. Love this track.

I misheard a bit of the lyrics until I read these.

    Was thinking:

Love ain't love until you feel it
Up riding high amongst the waves

    Was:

Love ain't love until you give it
Up riding high amongst the waves

Either way I think this is the single most upbeat PJ song ever. It makes me feel like I'm on a board in the ocean being washed by the water. Fantastic.

  12. No doubt inspired from his outings and habits with Laird Hamilton... Saw a great Iconoclasts episode a few years back, with Ed and Laird- (on Sundance); Wicked worth seeing Ed see the "double helix rainbow"(sic) in Hawaii... Would need to see it again to be certain I have that rainbow name correct-

  19. This is truly an awesome song. My favorite band since Ten released and will be until the end. BTW, I saw Ed's solo concert last year in Memphis at the Orpheum. Had nosebleed seats but was still pumped about it. Right before the show, some manager of Ed's tour popped out of no where and gave me and my girfriend front row seats right in front of the stage! Got to shake Ed's hand and all. Best moment of my life!!

  20. I love this song. The concert in Melbourne was amazing!

By the way it is "It’s rare when there is nothing wrong" not "It’s rare then where is nothing wrong".

In response to one of the previous posts I am pretty suer it is "better loud" not "better now".

  22. This song just hit me when I listened to it for the first time. It was when I fell for the man I still love. Lyrics were just like coming from my heart."I can feel like I have a soul that has been saved,I can feel like I've put away my early grave, I can see the light coming through the cloudy rays,Love ain't love until you give it up,I gotta say it now, better loud, than too late". For many nights the lyrics were wandering around in my mind, going deep inside and revealing some bottled up feelings which I was so scared to face. I couldn't figure out the meaning of "love ain't love until you give it up" until I really gave up and said "enough, I can't do this anymore. I accept the reality. He doesn't love me, want me." Then, saw his love was still in me. All anger, frustration, disappointment couldn't stop my love for him.It was then I realized true love has got nothing to do with flowers, compliments, romantic diners, etc. I just love him as who he is with all his flaws against all odds. This song helped me find my way.

  26. Definetely this song is a big inspiration when we try to rebuild our lives. It reminds me of my sweet and bitter memories, and THAT gives me the strength to forgive and move on."Once outside the undertow, just you and me and nothing more..." Love is the core of life, hope we all find true love...
