Just Breathe Lyrics from the Pearl Jam Album: Backspacer.
Pearl Jam's main lyricist, Eddie Vedder has described the lyrics of "Just Breathe" as being "as close to a love song as we've ever gotten". It's certainly a song that tugs on the heart strings. The lyrics tell the story in a simple way, meaning any listener can match it to their story if they choose.
In 2009 Pearl Jam played Just Breathe with a string quartet... by all accounts, it went off.
Just Breathe Lyrics PJ
Yes I understand that every life must end, aw huh
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, aw huh
I’m a lucky man to count on both hands
The ones I love
Some folks just have one,
Others they got none, aw huh
Stay with me
Let’s just breathe.
Practiced are my sins,
Never gonna let me win, aw huh
Under everything, just another human being, aw huh
Yeh, I don’t wanna hurt, there’s so much in this world
To make me bleed.
Stay with me
You’re all I see.
Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn’t now I’m a fool you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean
I wonder everyday
as I look upon your face, aw huh
Everything you gave
And nothing you would take, aw huh
Nothing you would take
Everything you gave
Did I say that I need you?
Oh, Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn’t now I’m a fool you see
No one know this more than me.
As I come clean
Nothing you would take everything you gave.
Hold me till I die
Meet you on the other side

ReplyDeleteCorrection:
ReplyDelete"As we sit alone, I know someday we must go on"
You can tell by his intonation that it's different from the way he sings:
"Yes I understand that every life must end, aw huh"

Probably you do not understand a bit...and that's the reason why he writes so deep lyrics on their song cause the guys is ahead of the sheeps like many!
Long life Ed and his political views. Excellent job waking up people through his songs!

This song is by far one of their best ballads, this is kind of "into the wild" song. Just love it!!!
ReplyDeleteThis song makes me fall in love with Pearl Jam all over again. Love the lyrics. So real , so true, so beautiful.
ReplyDeletenice words touching the heart
ReplyDeletesaid han
this song is beautiful and so true, really hits home.
ReplyDeletei'm a huge fan of pearl jam, and i was quite disappointed with their first single off Backspacer, a song called The Fixer - sounded too pop/sellout to me and the lyrics were very, well, childish. but THIS song is brilliant. very different from the ballads they did in their earlier years. as they've matured, so has their music. i don't always agree with eddie vedder's political views, but you really gotta love his passion. one of my all time faves is Yellow Ledbetter... i don't have a clue what the lyrics say, but eddie's passion bleeds through and captivates you.
ReplyDeleteThis is by far my favorite on the album, but they are all great. I could listen to this on repeat...over and over and over. Something about it speaks right to my heart. Love Pearl Jam!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautifully written and amazing song. So passionate and so sad, too. This is a classic that will be around a VERY long time. Love it.
ReplyDeletei have no words.. this whole album has hit me like a train... awesomely awesome...
ReplyDeleteif only janis Joplin could listen to this song "Just breathe"
ReplyDeleteGreat song, too much passion. This song confirm that Eddie is a great composer. Thanks
ReplyDeleteone of the best pear jam song ever: mature, delicate, a bit commercial but great...
ReplyDeleteThank you Pearl Jam, Thank You Eddie !
ReplyDeleteThis is what music is all about.
ReplyDeletelove this song. great lyrics and message :)
ReplyDeletecan't stop listening to this song. so beautiful, thanks for the lyrics so I can sing along.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful song, brings tears to my eyes every time i listen to it. never before have i identified with a song as i do this one xxxx
ReplyDeleteI almost died on September 11 2009 from a skull fracture, and the first time i heard this song I cried. The song has plenty of meaning and is a piece of art. Thanks Eddie and the rest of the gang for making the best music in history.
ReplyDeleteContemplating the end of life, someone to meet on the other side...love you, Eddie, and thanks for reminding me to just breathe.
ReplyDeletemost beautiful indeed eddie's voice is like velvet
ReplyDeleteMy husband died of ALS in 2005 and was so brave and loving during the whole ordeal. This song exemplifies our love and loss. Long live Eddie's lyrics - they are so real and true!
ReplyDeleteEin sehr sehr schönes Lied das unter die Haut geht, geschrieben für alle Liebenden!
ReplyDeleteAber die Übersetzung da oben is ja wohl absolut Ka..e!!
i thought the words were--there's so much in this world to make me believe. a mix of sadness, pain and beauty. bleed. believe. close enough i guess.
ReplyDeleteAt Steve - Oh you are sooo very right... Your comment `i don't have a clue what the lyrics say, but eddie's passion bleeds through and captivates you' sums up how I feel also. He tells a story in every song, and becuase of that, its sometimes hard to hear all words etc, but as he is such a good story teller/lrycist you understand what is being said... Love Love Love
ReplyDeletelove this song...gives me goose bumps...and hearing it live was even better...thank-you e.v
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful song, but I think those who plan to use it in their weddings might be mistaken about the meaning.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a death bed realization that the person dying has took for granted his loved one and is now only realizing how much he loved her, even though he showed no respect toward her throughout their life together.
Regardless, this is a beautiful song with very very VERY powerful lyrics. This is one of the top PJ songs of all time and second on this album only to "Unthought Known".
PJ has a great album here. In my opinion, it's too bad the first 2-3 songs are rather immature. They should have front-loaded the album with tracks 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11...they are way better!
I definitely agree with you - this song is perfect. For me, it is rare that I want to pull apart a song and dissect every line - but that is what I came to this sight to do. Love the song!
ReplyDeleteCorrection - this "site" to do. Thank you
ReplyDeleteTuesday, Im getting myself this CD.
ReplyDeleteThis song alone is reason enough as some say.
This song portray's love, Wisdom, friendship and so much more.
It went deep for me aswell. ain't afraid to say that I cried for half an hour after hearing this. Which is weird since the past 7 years when I cried it was two tears and done.
dylan, lennon, lightfoot, this song just moves me,heard it on a crap little radio ,phoned the radio station for the name of the song, wow! 25 cigarettes and dozen beer,i know every word, makes u think of ones u love and more...
ReplyDeletei put my sweet cat to sleep today. when we said goodbye to her at the vet and got into our car, this song was the first song on the radio. it meant so much to me. i've been listening to it all day. this song was a gift.
ReplyDeleteHe sang our wedding song in Perth with Mark Seymore back in '06 and now he's written the song that I'll renew my vows to. His voice, his lyrics, they squeeze my heart.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful song! Even better live at his concert in Auckland, NZ last month!
ReplyDeleteHa! I think it's a great funeral song...assuming I'm still with my husband when I die! This one makes me cry...but I listen over and over, so beautiful
ReplyDeleteMy Dad passed away while I was holding his hand 2 months ago in the hospital. This song just ripped me open again. I think it's because the lyrics can be interpreted in the light of a son & Dad. It also makes a nice love song, and I think it would make an awesome, yet better sweet song for my own wedding.
ReplyDeleteI word. "beautiful"
ReplyDeleteTo me this is the most powerful song I've heard!
ReplyDeleteIt stopped me dead in my tracks!! It seems to come from such a deep place and for anyone who's loved unconditionally and lost it takes on such a profound meaning...Cry everytime I play it!
WOW!!! So very moving!!!!!!
the first time in my life a song has ever made me cry the first time i heard it, this song is BEAUTIFUL
ReplyDeleteI need to spend more time with my grandfather. ..before it to late

art is meant to be understood in individual ways. so if someone thinks it is a song about wedding, it could be. there is no rules how a song should be understood!
just saw the live version at Austin City.
ReplyDeletei dont know if its alloud to pass, but here's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0mhrqfeFjQ
it does touch me quite deeply.
I heard this song once and immediately downloaded it. My father-in-law passed the other day and while my wife and I comforted him, prayed for him and played some soft, Christian music, I thought of this song. I played it. My wife had never heard it before but loved it and could sing it to him after hearing it once. So, I played it again. I kid you not, he took his last breath on the very last lyric. The next day my wife got in the car feeling a bit melancholy and this song came on the radio...again, she had never heard it on her usual radio stations and there it was...it made her day. This song will always have a place in my heart.
ReplyDeleteEddie for Prez 2012!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely amazing song. Reminds me of the Johnny Cash cover "I see a darkness" - both send chills down my spine.
ReplyDeleteWUT DOES IT MEAN - THE SONG - WHAT IS HE TRYING TO SAY
ReplyDeleteMy exboyfriend died in a car accident about 4 years ago. He LOVED pearl jam. I remember buying him cds and posters....... and as soon as I heard this song, I immediately thought of him. RIP Kyle..... you are ALWAYS loved and missed.
ReplyDeleteMy ex boyfriend/fiance had been a huge Pearl Jam fan...he and I had encountered many heated arguments and fights before finally parting ways...it's been years since we've talked...anyways...one of the arguments that is etched in my mind was about how he thought NEEDING me was not good (WANTING ok) for our relationship...(this song made me think of him again...) i wonder how's he doing...maybe on the otherside...
ReplyDeleteSimply beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIts great to see that Pearl Jam is still at the top of their game after nearly 20 years. I have been a huge fan since the mid 90's when they came out with Yellow Ledbetter and Black, which are still my two favorite songs.
ReplyDeleteMy husband just sent me the link of this song from YouTube and said...
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful song and I think it expresses how I feel about you...
I'm still crying!
nothings less than BEAUTIFUL!!
ReplyDeleteSo... Im young and I just discover PJ about an year...
ReplyDeleteYou know all that teen things that we pass trough and just want to cry... oh well he is the one .
he says the right thing when we need to ear it... he make me smile when im sad..
he make cry when im lonely
he make me feel alive when Im in my worst moments
and ...
I mean... how can someone wait for love with knowing it?
unsure to believe it exists?
yeah ...how?
when im just thinking maybe love its just an happy ending false story...
I ear PJ songs and rebirth
(a portuguese girl writhing with a lot of mistakes but with a lot o love to)
Thank you EDDIE VEDDER for the love you gave us
I'm glad to see people here have a better insight to this song than some of the other sites I've been on. I agree with most of what I've read here. Just Breathe is a simple song about life, love & mortality. And yes it brough to me tears as well.
ReplyDeleteMy ex husband sent this to me in an e-mail...all I can say is WOW.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you who are hung up on getting the lyrics right, buy the CD. The lyrics are included. I was fortunate to have been at one of the Spectrum concerts where the song was performed live. It's a beautiful song, beautiful lyrics. We should allow people to feel and express whatever emotions the song provokes in them rather than correcting or challenging another's interpretation.
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew the kind of love that inspired the words of this song.
ReplyDeleteIf you like this song then you should also listen to "Guarenteed" from Eddie Vedder...
ReplyDeleteC'est vraiment la meilleur chansons que j'ai jamais entendu.
ReplyDeleteWOW!! This song is absolutely gorgeous and definitely can be interpreted in many ways. I see it as a song that enables you to explore the depths of your own soul...everything from loving to losing to coming to terms w/your own mortality. It's impossible not to cry everytime. By all means it is up there w/Black, if not better! PJ ROCKS!!!
ReplyDeleteDang.
ReplyDeleteNoob Song -.-

ReplyDeleteadd me bahaha
Simply beautiful. Takes my breath away every time I hear it. It actually made me cry the first time. :)
ReplyDeleteit put into words what i couldnt explain on how i feel for my significant other
ReplyDeleteI'm 52 years old..this is close to being the greatest rock and roll song in my time. The expert balance of hard core rock and soothing sensitivity has my vote. keep on rocking!
ReplyDeletesomeone mentioned they want this as their wedding song and i just wanna say... THANK YOU cuz i do tooo! simple, beautiful...big fan :)
ReplyDeleteDoesn't anyone see? Its about Jesus. How he is realizing how much he needs him. A sinner, like everyone, only cure, Jesus. Coming clean. He's talking to his savior. Its a beautiful prayer of thankfulness and reflection.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful song. So beautiful

An instant classic. Just listened to this tune from the Spectrum show in Philly that I attended. Arguably the best rock n roll band of all time.
ReplyDeleteMy father passed away in December after being in a nursing home 9 months. He never took, always gave and this is how I repaid him. As I "come clean" I never should have put him there. I can only hope I am worthy of meeting him on the other side someday.
ReplyDeleteWow, EV is the man...so powerful...makes the hair stand upon my back EVERY time I hear it. Is that Natalie Merchant whoo hooing in the background?
ReplyDeleteits a great song and even though pearl jam are aging they arent letting up with impressing pppl a great song an amazing group of ppl and hey, im only 12 yers old
ReplyDeleteI find this a beautiful song about love towards the ones you love, not just couple, but family, friens . . .about recognition of inconditional love through maturity.I will see them perform at the BBK live in Bilbao this coming july, with Alice in Chains and Paul Weller. It,s very special for me because I,ve lived in Seattle two years of my life,(to learn english this is), and now I get to see them together so close to my hometown, dream come true!
ReplyDeleteLost my old man 5 years ago, a very special one indeed and I never thought that a song could tell so much about love, hurt, loss and how lucky I was for having a special friend like him. I'm a father myself, and the passion that Eddie puts in all the songs he sings, it sure helps me to look at my 3 kids and concentrate in them, all the love I have, so they can be better persons. This song means a lot to me. God Bless.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is sick and right now we're going through the steps......what to do next, what about our two small kids? Is the treatment going to work, how much time is left? Then I heard this in the car......I lost it. My husband isn't great with words, experienced so much pain in his life and made many mistakes along the way. I felt like this song said all of the things he needed to say.......my best friend. Thank you for this.
ReplyDeleteI love this song, it´s amazing, it makes you think about the small thing in life, thing´s that sometimes we don´t give much attention but that sometimes are the most important, the little thing in our life.......
ReplyDeleteLove it. "The End" is also great!
ReplyDeleteThe song gets even better when you see him live!!!
ReplyDeleteOne of the best songs I ever heard, no doubt... Touching and emotional... LOVE PJ
ReplyDeleteWow, his voice could make anyone melt. just beautiful!!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteNot only great wedding song but funeral as well. Just plain emotional. Sure to become a classic!
ReplyDeleteI was trying to find a way to let my wife know on mothers day just how much she means to me. Little did I know that I would turn on the radio and once again be surprised by EV. So many times I've cut loose to PJ's music and I'm doing it once again.
ReplyDeleteThanks

My mother became sick with cancer when I was a young girl and I eventually found myself in an orphanage. I am in recovery and all my life I have wondered what it was I never said to her. I never looked her in the eye and told her to stay with me and that I needed her. When I heard this song I realized this, but I hope she knew I loved her.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pearl Jam, I love you music, your lyrics, you are the best!!!!!!!! This song is great, thanks to give to everybody your music... Y pura vida ustedes son lo mejor del grunge y por favor tengan en cuenta Costa Rica para un concierto, estaríamos muy agradecidos de tener una de las mejores bandas en Tiquisia!!!!!!!! ReplyDeletetop top song from a band that just gets better and better,Eddies lyrics make you feel the song not just hear it
ReplyDeleteA friend's son just committed suicide and requested that this song be played in his final note that he left behind. What do you think he might have been thinking about to make this his last request? Everyone's just trying to make sense of this terrible tragedy. Bless you all...
ReplyDeleteNice jingle. first time I heard it, my husband just came home after being away for Several weeks at a time. he was making breakfast. I walked up to him and we stared at each other for a moment. The first words are sung and Gradualy we hugged and started to slow dance. Right there in the kitchen! The kids gave there usual teenage comments and laughed at us. He is away again and it's 4 in the morning. The song is in my head and I see him.
ReplyDeleteEvery moment is precious. I worry that those unspoken words.... You know the ones that never get said, and one day he is gone for good and I didn't tell him.
EVERY time I hear this song I cry because I think of my father, RIP.
ReplyDeleteperfect song for a wedding, funeral or any event... PJ has tugged on all our heart strings once again x
ReplyDeleteIs it tough for me to listen to the song because it makes me think of my father whom I loved so much and passed away a few years ago. He died not being able to breath anymore. It is a great song and a great album. I saw PJ for their first concert ever in Paris, must have been around 93. The energy and intensity were beyond words. An immense band.
ReplyDeleteThere's so much emotion in this song. I'm going through a tough time right now and I'm just listening to it over and over and over again.
ReplyDeleteI just lost someone I truly loved with all my heart and every time i listen to this song its exactly the way i feel really like this song is very deep.
ReplyDeleteAmazing....just that ...no words...just....cant find a better band
ReplyDeletethis is an awesome fucking song! from the first moment i heard it and every time since. ive been a huge fan since their first single over 20 years ago and every album since. they are without a doubt one of the best bands out there. i'm 48 and getting ready to get married for the first time and i'm gonna sing it to my soon to be wife. we've been together 12 years now and i couldn't think of a better wedding song. thanks eddie for being so good at putting my feelings into words!
ReplyDeleteAwesome song, awesome band. I love how it make me sit back and reflect on my life. Thank You PJ!
ReplyDeleteI am a 29 year old woman with cystic fibrosis and the slogan for the CF foundation is Just Breathe. So to me this fits right in with the battles of this disease and fighting to survive. It is a lung disease that literally makes it hard to breathe and many young lives are cut short because of it. Really hits home for me!
